Take the strong out of- find another adjective, dammit. I’m just playing a woman, if it’s not strong, what is it? You’re telling me there’s another option? There’s like a weak option? Emilia Clarke on playing strong women.

Just as Coachella Music and Arts Festival sets the bar for every other American music festival of the summer, Beyoncé recurringly sets the bar for every other performer.

A year after postponing her headlining set in 2017 due to pregnancy, Beyoncé treated her return to the stage like a family reunion, homecoming pep rally and a Beyhive-unifying rebel yell before heading into battle.

To start off her two-hour show, Queen Bey evoked the spirit of another member of black royalty, Egyptian Queen Nefertiti, appearing in a custom Balmain gold-crusted cape and headdress.

While a dance brass band and drum line drew the audience’s eye and ear, Bey made a quick change into denim shorts, a college-crested hoodie and iridescent fringe boots. She ran through two decades of her hits while ascending a pyramid of bleachers, employed color guard dancers and baton twirlers who moved in precision to every note, and even had a pseudo-college step show reminiscent of a historically black fraternity performance.

Paul Manafort Has Surrendered To Federal Agents

npr:

Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, surrendered himself to federal law enforcement authorities on Monday morning, a Justice Department source tells NPR’s Ryan Lucas, representing a new phase of the investigations into figures from Trump’s inner circle.

Both Manafort and Rick Gates, his former deputy, were told to surrender, The New York Times reports. Over the summer, the pair registered with the U.S. government as foreign agents.

Manafort was taken into federal custody days after news emerged that a federal grand jury assembled by Department of Justice special counsel Robert Mueller had voted to indict a figure in Mueller’s investigation into possible coordination between Russia and people close to the Trump campaign in last year’s presidential election.

Brooklyn’s Curlfest celebrates natural hair during 4th annual beauty festival

  • It was a steaming hot Saturday in Prospect Park, but the #BlackGirlMagic was even hotter as thousands of women ascended on the fourth annual Curlfest, the largest natural beauty festival in the U.S. From waist-length braids to decorative butterflies nestled in afros, the women stunned from their crowns to their sandaled toes.
  • The yearly event is produced by the five women of Curly Girl Collective, an experiential marketing group that specializes in multicultural beauty. The event’s mission is to create a space of celebration for women of color to celebrate their locs, afros and twist-outs. “Curlfest was founded on the idea of you all needing to be celebrated,” Tracey Coleman, director of events, said at the press conference as she pointed to the crowd. “If you look around, and you see images of beauty, they don’t necessarily look like us.”
  • Coleman was dressed in an Ankara jumpsuit with oversized earrings made of stitched leather and wore her hair in a puffed afro. When asked about the friction within the natural-hair movement of “good” hair versus “bad” hair, Coleman didn’t hesitate. “The great thing about the movement now is that barrier is being broken down; there’s no good hair and there’s no bad hair,” Coleman said in an interview with Mic. “Healthy hair is what’s good, so that’s what we’re here to promote.” Read more. Climate change is causing sea turtle eggs to cook in the sand

  • The dangerous effects of climate change are no longer a far-off possibility. Just ask the baby sea turtles.
  • From the very second sea turtles are born they are in a fight for survival. After they dig their way to sand’s surface they must beware of every predator and every obstacle in their path to the cool ocean waters.
  •  In fact, only an estimated one in 1,000 sea turtles survive into adulthood.
  • And now it appears humans have caused one more obstacle for these tiny creatures, even before they hatch. Read more (6/16/17)
